Definition of the Regional Planning Association

According to § 12 of the State Planning Act (Landesplanungsgesetz, LPlG), the State of Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania is divided into the four planning regions of Western Mecklenburg, Central Mecklenburg/Rostock, the Mecklenburg Lake District and Western Pomerania. In each one of these planning regions there is a statutory duty to form a Regional Planning Association, which in each case is a consortium of the administrative districts and urban districts of the region. As statutory corporations they are subject to legal and technical supervision by the State. The supervisory body is the highest-tier planning authority, which also takes charge of the control of their legality in consultation with the Ministry of the Interior.
The region of Western Mecklenburg consists of the urban districts of The City of Schwerin – the State capital – and the Hanseatic City of Wismar together with the three counties of Ludwigslust, North-Western Mecklenburg and Parchim.
The Western Mecklenburg Regional Planning Association was formed on September 28th 1992.
